Jill February 15, 2021

THIS – THAT – THESE – THOSE:

THESE words are called “demonstratives” in English because they demonstrate (show) which thing/things we are talking about. We can use these words as adjectives or pronouns. We use these words based on the number of items we are discussing (singular or plural) and the proximity of the items in relation to the speaker.

Examples:

  • This car needs an oil change. (one car that is near the speaker)
  • That car needs new tires (one car that is farther away)
  • These cars are brand new (more than one car that are near the speaker)
  • Those cars are used (more than one car and they are positioned farther from the speaker)
